Smiling: The most effective investment you can make in your career.

Smiling: The most effective investment you can make in your career. In the 2007 documentary Skid Row, Pras Michel (of hip-hop group the Fugees) lived undercover as a homeless person for over a week. During that time he had to find money in order to get food. When he first arrived at skid row he went from car to car begging for quarters. At the end of his first day he noted that when he smiled at the people he was asking for change he received a lot more. Michel said, “I am not the type of dude that likes to smile. Hustling up there, man let me tell you something, people pay me to smile. From this point on, I am always going to smile, man!”

A pleasant smile is inviting and elicits trust from others. Considering that most people make a judgment about you within a few seconds of meeting, a smile will help ensure a hiring manager views you in a positive light.

Would you like an interviewer to see you as confident and smile back at you? Here are a couple interesting facts about smiling from pickthebrain.com:

1) Smiling helps you get promoted: Smiles make a person seem more attractive, sociable and confident, and people who smile more are more likely to get a promotion.

2) Smiles are contagious: It’s not just a saying: smiling really is contagious, scientists say. In a study conducted in Sweden, people had difficulty frowning when they looked at other subjects who were smiling, and their muscles twitched into smiles all on their own.

Another interesting insight about smiling was mentioned in the February 26, 2011 Business Insider article “If You Look Like This, Your Pay Check Will Be Higher Than Average”, which references many studies on physical appearance and the likelihood of being hired or promoted. One study mentioned “subjects ranked people who were smiling as more trustworthy than people with straight faces.”

How would you like to immediately be considered more of the following:
-Attractive
-Wealthy
-Popular with the opposite sex
-A success in your career
-Intelligent
-Happy
-Friendly
-Interesting
-Kind
-Sensitive to other people

Well, according to Beall Research and Training of Chicago all it takes to appear more attractive, intelligent, interesting, successful and wealthy is white, healthy looking teeth!

528 people were divided into two groups. Both groups viewed pictures of the same 8 people. The pictures of people were exactly the same except for one difference: their teeth. Half of the 528 people viewed pictures before minor cosmetic dentistry, the other half viewed pictures of the same people, but now they had straight, white teeth. The group who viewed the pictures of people with white, healthy looking teeth, as the only difference, ranked each of the 8 people in the pictures higher in the 10 categories you see above!
